There is a narrative that goes roughly like this about the origins of the beautiful city of Udaipur. When Maharana Udai Singh was hunting in the Aravalli Hills, he once got to meet a holy sage. The King was advised by the Sage to found a kingdom in the agricultural valley, which would be well-sheltered by the high Aravalli Hills. Then, in 1557 A.D., Maharana Udai Singh laid the foundation stone for Udaipur. The former capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar was Chittorgarh. The Sisodias, who declared themselves to be the offspring of the Sun God, were succeeded by Maharana Udai Singh. It is believed that the Sisodias are the world's oldest governing family. The Sisodias are considered to be the most formidable warrior tribe in Rajasthan. A further explanation for moving the capital from Chittorgarh to Udaipur was the ongoing enemy attacks.
Udai Singh moved the entire kingdom to Udaipur to protect Chittor from the Mughal emperor Akbar's attack in 1568. Due to the Aravalli Hills' barriers, Udaipur was naturally safe. Udaipur has grown into a complete metropolis since then. The Sisodias gradually reclaimed their independence once the Mughal Empire was defeated. Except for Chittorgarh Fort, they retook the majority of Mewar. Up until its transformation into the royal territory of British India in 1818, Udaipur remained the capital of Mewar. The Government of India was handed the position by the Maharaja of Udaipur upon India's independence in 1947. Mewar was incorporated into the state of Rajasthan at that point.
